Rob Serrouya on caribou migration research paper
You know when you stumble into a dark spruce forest on a steep hill, and lichen drips off the branches? That’s caribou country. Caribou used to migrate all over these mountains. Now the Columbia South herd is extinct, and the Frisby-Boulder herd is functionally extirpated. The Columbia North herd, is actually growing.
Scientists recently published a research paper about the mountain caribou herds in the BC Interior, stretching from Prince George to Nelson. They found that although some of the herds are growing, all but one of their migration routes are shrinking. Rob Serrouya is one of the scientists who contributed to the research. I went and found him this week in his office in the Big Eddy.
